Newport Beach and San Diego, CA

July 2 – 8, 2017  My brother Greg along with his wife Cynthia and daughter Nicole invited us to Newport Beach, California where he rented a house on Balboa Peninsula only a few steps from the beach.  We spent the Holiday on the Peninsula then drove to San Diego to spend the remainder of our visit in California before coming home.  The weather was great throughout all of the trip.

Sunday July 2nd – Maria and I flew to John Wayne/Orange County Airport today and had a substantial delay in our flight due to a mechanical difficulty in Dallas.  We arrived in the late evening with our flight taking almost twice as long.  After arriving we rented a car and drove a very short distance out to Balboa Peninsula where Greg had rented a house for the week.  Kristen, Lucas and Ryan were there along with Greg, Cynthia, and Nicole.   Nicole had brought along a friend.  Greg cooked all of us a steak dinner after we arrived.

Monday July 3rd – We got acquainted with the area today and had lunch in Huntington Beach.

Tuesday July 4th – Greg had friends come in for the day.  The peninsula was very crowded and hard.   Parking was really difficult. Some of us spent some time on the beach or just caught up on things.  Kristen, Lucas, and Ryan left after lunch to try and get back to Phoenix in time for Russ and Deb’s annual 4th of July party. We watched the fireworks in the evening but from the peninsula they did not seem to be that good.

Wednesday July 5th – Maria and I left after breakfast and drove to San Diego.   We took the ferry over to Balboa Island, and drove along Route  1 stopped at Laguna Beach for lunch and stopped again at the Ritz-Carlton overlooking the sea to have a drink.  We arrived at the San Diego Marriott and had dinner at Roy’s adjoining the hotel.  We really enjoyed the hotel.  We used the large pool as well as several comfortable bar/restaurants outdoors.

Thursday July 6th –  I woke early and returned the rental car to the airport.   After I returned we went looking for a breakfast spot (Edgewater Grill) near the water and outdoors.  Not a place I would recommend. Things really had not opened up yet and while we waited we walked toward the USS Midway Museum on the northern edge of the water.   I found it unusually that we could not find a nice place for breakfast.  We walked all over the neighboring areas away from the water.  It was a very hot day and we found comfort while in the buildings air conditioning.  That evening we had dinner at the Marriott Marina Kitchen during a happy hour and took a evening tour bus ride through San Diego.

Friday July 7th – We took a boat ride to Coronado.  After arriving we rented some bikes and rode to the other side of the island to see the Hotel del Coronado.  We had lunch at the Tartine European Style Cafe in Coronado.  That evening we went to a concert at the Marina Park located on the water’s edge in which Leslie Odom performed.

Saturday July 8th – We flew back to Baltimore.   In retrospect, it may have been a better idea to fly round trip San Diego and get a better flight as opposed to flying the way we did.  I guess you never know.  San Diego is a fun place I’m sure we will be back.  Next time we visit it would be nice to go to the USS Midway Museum.
